Frequently Asked Questions

How does ArchiveConnect work?

ArchiveConnect is client software installed on each Mac computer that stops inadvertent file recall behavior and gives Mac computers other functions for file archiving such as a visual clue that the file is offline as well as a "Bring Online" function to bring a selected number of files back online as a group. If the file server is running ExtremeZ-IP, GroupLogic's AFP server for Windows, additional functionality is enabled so that offline files are color-coded, making it easier for users to distinguish between online and offline files.

Can’t I simply disable icon previews to resolve this problem?

No. Our testing shows that there are no configuration changes available that reliably prevent the behavior caused by Apple’s Quick Look and Cover Flow usability enhancements.

I want to use file system archiving with network-based Mac home folders. Will ArchiveConnect make this possible?

Yes. ArchiveConnect 1.1 and later prevents the Mac client’s Spotlight indexing of offline files in a network home folder, keeping offline files from being unintentionally recalled.

What extra functionality can you get with ExtremeZ-IP servers?

When used with ExtremeZ-IP™, ArchiveConnect allows setting the Finder color label for files that are "offline," which provides the end-user with a visual cue that the file is offline (in Finder). Also, ExtremeZ-IP can optionally require end-users to explicitly bring files online before opening them, and it also provides improved performance of multiple file recalls.
